APPENDIX F – HKLC Nut-Free Policy
Given that several students in the Center have a severe peanut/nut allergy, we have decided to institute a Center-wide peanut and tree nut free policy. For allergic students, strict avoidance of peanut/nut products is the only way to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction and the need for emergency medical treatment.
Previously, we have had classroom-specific policies related to peanut/nut allergies. After much thought and consideration, we decided to expand the policy to encompass the entire Center and to cover the avoidance of peanuts and tree nuts, since according to the Food Allergy Network, most allergists will advise parents of a peanut-allergic child to avoid tree nuts as well.
The greatest potential for exposure at school is to peanut/nut products. Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe reaction. To reduce the risk of exposure, the Center is completely peanut and tree-nut free. Parents are asked not to send any peanut or nut-containing products to the Center. (For example, peanut butter, other nut butters, cookies, crackers, bars, or cereals containing peanuts or nuts, or anything else containing nuts or nut butters.) In addition, if a staff member or child has eaten peanuts or treenuts prior to coming to school, please be sure the staff member or child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the Center and that the staff member or child does not have any residue of the peanut/nut product on their clothing.
Following lunch and snacks, the children will wash their hands. The tables will then be cleaned with soap, water, and paper towels.
